1.Revenue Collection: The department is charged with assessing, collecting, and accounting for various duties and taxes on imports and exports, including Import Duty, Value Added Tax (VAT) on imports, Excise Duty, and the Railway Development Levy.
2.Trade Facilitation: It implements measures and utilizes technology, such as the Integrated Customs Management System (iCMS) and pre-arrival processing, to expedite the legitimate movement of goods, thereby reducing clearance times and the cost of doing business.
3.Border Security & Protection: C&BC plays a critical role in national security by interdicting and seizing contraband, illegal drugs, counterfeit goods, and other prohibited or restricted items. Officers are stationed at all points of entry/exit, including seaports, airports, and land border points.
4.Enforcement & Compliance: The department uses various tools, including cargo x-ray scanners and electronic cargo tracking systems, to verify cargo and ensure compliance with Kenyan and East African Community Customs Laws.
5.Trade Statistics: It is responsible for generating and managing trade statistics for government planning purposes.
